David Spence, Founder, Good Space

SpenceHeadShot4David Spence came to Dallas as a young attorney in 1992 to work in non-profit community development.  Assigned to an entrepreneurship program in West Dallas, David, with his wife Cindy, bought and renovated a bungalow in nearby Oak Cliff.

In 1995, David formed Good Space, Inc., this time choosing a for-profit real-estate company as a vehicle for community development.  Good Space purchases, restores, and operates early-20th-century properties, all of them in and around the historic Bishop Arts District.

Though David is often associated with the growth of Bishop Arts from neighborhood hangout to metropolitan dining district, Good Space typically works on the margins of the area.  Good Space’s tenants include well-regarded restaurants and pâtisseries, established artists, young apartment-dwellers, and professionals of the “creative class.”  Good Space’s current project is at Tyler & Davis Streets, where four properties will be combined to create 21,000 square feet of shops and eateries.

Jeremy & Lila Stewart and John Veatch, Founders, Hari Mari

Hari Mari’s roots are born out of time spent living in Indonesia, where Lila & Jeremy Stewart worked on separate projects related to improving kids’ lives; Jeremy, making a documentary film on children battling hunger & malnutrition in Southeast Asia; Lila, volunteering with an orphanage outside of Jakarta.  Returning to the States, and soon thereafter expecting their daughter, they decided the next project they undertook would go to help kids in some capacity.

Moving back to their hometown of Dallas, they saw an unmet need for colorful & comfortable flip flops at the premium level – something different & unique from the sea of black & brown sandals that usually dominate retailers’ walls, while also preserving a timeless, classic look.

Partnering with childhood friend, John Veatch, the three married their passions for making a great flip flop & helping children together, founding Hari Mari in 2012.  Seeing a lot of companies & brands helping kids abroad, Hari Mari decided to focus its efforts on the U.S., and were stunned to discover pediatric cancer is the most fatal disease among American children, more fatal than all other childhood diseases combined, with more than 13,000 new kids diagnosed each year.
